Flu Treatment – Prompt, Patient-Centric Care Provided by Florida Medical Clinic

Flu Treatment

Flu treatment usually focuses on alleviating a patient’s symptoms, such as fever and body aches, and preventing the infection from being transmitted to other people. At Florida Medical Clinic, we welcome individuals who are experiencing flu-like symptoms to turn to us for a prompt diagnosis and comprehensive care.

Typically, flu treatment recommendations include:

  • Staying home from work or school
  • Resting as much as possible
  • Drinking adequate fluids, including water, decaf tea, and electrolyte drinks to prevent dehydration
  • Taking over-the-counter or prescription fever reducers
  • Using cough drops and/or cough syrup to alleviate a persistent cough
  • Maintaining hygiene to kill germs

Because influenza is caused by a virus – not a bacteria – antibiotics are not effective in treating the flu. However, physicians can sometimes prescribe anti-viral medications to help alleviate severe symptoms and reduce the duration of the illness by a few days. Anti-viral drugs (available as pills, liquids, powders, and intravenous formulations) can sometimes also help prevent severe flu-related complications, such as pneumonia. Anti-viral flu treatment is most commonly recommended for individuals who are at a high risk of hospitalization or have other life-threatening concerns.

At Florida Medical Clinic, we provide our patients with individualized treatment recommendations based on their unique needs. For more information about flu treatment at Florida Medical Clinic or to request an appointment with one of our experienced physicians, contact us today.
