Flu Shots Can Help Keep You Healthy All Season Long

Flu ShotsAnnual flu shots are recommended for most individuals, including adults who are in good health and rarely get sick. Getting the flu can be a minor inconvenience for some, but for others, it can be much more serious. To help protect our patients (and those who live and work in close contact with them and are particularly susceptible to influenza infections), Florida Medical Clinic offers routine flu vaccines in accordance with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s official recommendations.

Flu shots have been used for more than 60 years, and currently, medical professionals create a new vaccine each year to reflect the specific viruses that are of the most concern for the upcoming flu season. Traditionally, flu vaccines protect against:

  • An H1N1 influenza A virus;
  • An H3N2 influenza A virus;
  • One or more influenza B viruses

Flu shots work by introducing very small, inactive amounts of each virus into the body, which trigger the body’s development of protective antibodies. A person who gets a flu shot is then protected against the viruses that are present in the vaccine. Although it is still possible to come in contact with (and become sick from) other influenza viruses that are not included in the vaccine, symptoms are often milder and don’t last as long in individuals who have received a flu shot.

Florida Medical Clinic’s experienced physicians offer flu shots to children, adults, and seniors. Our team can answer any questions you have and help you make sure you’re fully prepared for a healthy flu season.
