Torn Meniscus Treatment

Proven orthopaedics care.

Our orthopaedics team has seen and treated every type of meniscus tear. Torn meniscus treatment can involve any number of surgical and non-surgical options, ranging from anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy to removal or repair of the affected tissues. At Florida Medical Clinic, patients of all ages and activity levels can discuss their treatment options with a team of highly experienced orthopaedic physicians, surgeons, and sports medicine specialists.

The ideal approach to torn meniscus treatment often depends on the extent and location of the tear. Small tears that only involve the outer portion of the meniscus may heal on their own without surgery. However, more extensive tears may require surgical treatment to repair.

Non-surgical torn meniscus treatment options include:

  • Over-the-counter or prescription medications
  • Temporary rest and activity modification
  • Ice
  • Physical therapy

For some, the preferred approach to surgery would be to suture together the torn pieces of the cartilage (a procedure known as a meniscus repair). In other situations, the more appropriate option is a partial meniscectomy, in which damaged tissue is removed. Depending on the patient’s needs, traditional or minimally invasive (arthroscopic) techniques may be used to perform these operations. The recovery time for each procedure is different, and the right option for you depends on your lifestyle and activity levels, as well as the severity of the injury.
