Melanoma is one of the most common forms of skin cancer, and it’s also considered to be the most dangerous. That’s why melanoma surgery is often recommended as part of a comprehensive skin cancer treatment plan. Skin cancer surgeons typically recommend removing the cancerous cells from the skin, as well as one or more follow-up treatments (e.g., radiation therapy) to destroy any residual cells.

  • Simple Excisions — For small, localized melanomas
  • Wide Excisions — For melanomas that were found to have additional cancer cells in the margin of the simple initial excision, indicating the need for a follow-up procedure. Wide excisions may also be used for larger melanomas that require the removal of a substantial amount of tissue
  • Lymph Node Dissections — This procedure is used to check the nearby lymph nodes for the presence of a potential secondary malignant growth
  • Mohs Microsurgeries — For very small, early-stage melanomas that have developed on cosmetically sensitive areas, such as the eyelids or the nose
