Sleep Apnea Treatment

Proven treatments for sleep apnea.

Our mission is to find the right treatment to help you sleep soundly through the night. Sleep apnea treatment can be as simple as a few small lifestyle changes, or as complex as upper airway surgery. The extent of your treatment will depend on the type and severity of your symptoms, as well as your response to any previous attempts at therapy.

For minor cases of sleep apnea, we may recommend a combination of the following lifestyle recommendations:

  • Weight loss
  • Smoking cessation
  • Treating any known allergies or asthma symptoms

For moderate to severe cases of sleep apnea, lifestyle recommendations may be supplemented with additional forms of treatment. The most common treatment method is the use of a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure device or a CPAP. Ā These devices are small machines that are kept at your bedside and attached by a hose to a mask that delivers pressurized air into the nose throughout the night. This can help keep the upper airway passages open during sleep. There are several different types of CPAP machines, and an experienced pulmonologist can prescribe the proper option for your needs.

Other options for treating more extensive sleep apnea include dental appliances that slide the jaw forward during sleep, supplemental oxygen, positional therapy (sleeping in a position that allows for better airflow), and hypoglossal nerve stimulation. Upper airway surgery or surgery to reposition the jaw may be considered, but only if non-surgical therapies do not produce the desired results.

At Florida Medical Clinic, our Department of Pulmonology & Sleep Disorders provides comprehensive sleep apnea treatment. From lifestyle recommendations to surgical and non-surgical therapies, our physicians consider a full range of potential options to help you improve the quality of your sleep, and in turn, quality of life.
