Colonoscopy

A simple procedure that saves lives.

Adults over the age of 50 are recommended to receive routine colonoscopy screenings at least once every ten years. For those with a family history of colon cancer, your primary care provider will likely recommend a colonoscopy sooner and more regularly. This simple, outpatient procedure can serve as either a preventive or diagnostic test.

A colonoscopy may be recommended for a variety of purposes, including to:

  • Check for pre-cancerous growths (polyps) in the colon or rectum
  • Detect ulcers, inflammation, and other common gastrointestinal issues
  • Collect tissues samples for lab tests

Using a small, flexible tube with a camera attached to the end, we’re able to examine the inside of the rectum and colon. This procedure takes only a few minutes, and a summary of the results can usually be provided on the same day. If tissue samples are collected during a colonoscopy, lab tests typically take up to two weeks to process.

At Florida Medical Clinic Orlando Health, we offer colonoscopy testing in several convenient locations. Our Department of Gastroenterology is one of the largest and most robust in the area. In fact, we perform thousands of GI procedures each year. Our diagnostic lab is COLA (Commission on Office Laboratory Accreditation) certified.

After having a colonoscopy, our electronic health records system will provide digital documentation of the results, and all of your Florida Medical Clinic Orlando Health providers will be able to access this information at the touch of a button. This eliminates the need for you to have records transferred from one provider to the next.
