If you are physically active, a sports medicine doctor can help you prevent and recover from injury and provide

  • Acute injuries – sudden injuries that happen during physical activity such as sports or exercise
  • Chronic injuries – develop over time due to overuse
  • Injury risk assessment & prevention – help you understand how you were injured and how to prevent further injury in the future
  • Nutrition counseling – assess your diet and create a plan to help you maximize performance and speed recovery
  • Exercise plans – provide recommendations for strength training and conditioning
  • Concussion – diagnosis, evaluation and management
  • Athletes – aid in return-to-play decisions after injury or illness

Many sports injuries do not require surgery and these specialists have the knowledge to treat them.  In the event surgery is required, sports medicine doctors are equipped to identify the need quickly refer you to the appropriate surgeon based on injury type.  They also understand the tests and imaging that will be required for surgery and ensure they are completed in advance.
