A lumpectomy is a type of breast cancer surgery where only the tumor and a small amount of surrounding tissue is removed. This procedure is a form of breast-sparing surgery most commonly recommended for patients with early-stage cancer. Because this is a less invasive surgery than other procedures, such as a mastectomy, the recovery time tends to be shorter and easier after a lumpectomy.

A lumpectomy can be highly effective at removing cancer from the breasts, and the cosmetic outcomes are often quite positive as well. However, even after a successful lumpectomy, patients may be prescribed a course of chemotherapy or radiation therapy to ensure that all of the cancerous cells have been removed. If, following a lumpectomy, cancerous cells are found in the “margins” (the regular breast tissue that was removed in addition to the tumor), a second operation may be scheduled to remove any remaining tumor cells.

Lymph Node Removal
