And, while the majority of individuals significantly benefit from conservative therapies, our Urology Department also offers another option for those who experience persistent symptoms: InterStim. This implantable device works by sending small electrical pulses to the nerves that control bladder and bowel function.

InterStim is an FDA-approved bowel and bladder control device that is implanted beneath the skin. A thin wire carries small pulses to the sacral muscles and a hand-held patient programmer allows users to adjust the strength of the stimulation and turn the system on or off.

InterStim can be used to treat:

• Constipation
• Fecal Incontinence
• Overactive Bladder (urinary urgency and frequency)
• Urinary Retention

Individuals who use InterStim for incontinence treatment often note significant improvements in the number of episodes that they experience, as well as an improved quality of life.
