Hip and Knee Arthritis

Surgical And Non-Surgical Treatment Options

Hip and knee arthritis are extremely common conditions that affect more than 3 million adults each year. At Florida Medical Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine & Spine, Dr. Gerald “Trey” Alexander III, M.D., helps countless individuals find meaningful relief from osteoarthritis symptoms, providing comprehensive treatment to help alleviate pain and improve mobility.

In many cases, it’s possible to treat hip or knee arthritis without surgery. Dr. Alexander may recommend a number of conservative therapies to patients with osteoarthritis, including the following:

  • Over-the-counter and prescription medications
  • Cortisone injections
  • Hyaluronic acid injections
  • Physical therapy and at-home exercise
  • Activity modification and other lifestyle changes
  • Weight loss, if applicable
  • Knee braces
  • Canes, crutches, and other weight-bearing aids

If these therapies don’t adequately help address a patient’s symptoms, surgery may also be an option.  Dr. Alexander specializes in orthopedic hip and knee procedures, including computer-assisted and minimally invasive joint replacement surgery. By removing the arthritic bone from a hip or knee joint, then covering the ends of the bones with a prosthetic implant that mimics the motion of the natural joint, it is possible to minimize pain and improve daily functioning.

Throughout his career, Dr. Alexander has performed numerous surgeries on arthritic joints. He is fellowship-trained in hip and knee replacement, and has experience with today’s most advanced techniques. He also specializes in revising failed hip and knee replacements.
