Florida Medical Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine & Spine provides a comprehensive range of services for our patients, from diagnosing disorders of the skeletal system to offering various treatment approaches. In some cases, surgery may be needed. For patients in this circumstance, surgeon Stephen Raterman, MD, is here to offer the individualized care necessary for them to maximize function and mobility.
Dr. Raterman specializes in orthopaedic surgery for the hips, knees, and shoulders — for people of all ages. Although joint problems are most commonly associated with the natural aging process, they also commonly occur in younger people, especially in athletes. For this reason, Dr. Raterman has trained to perform a variety of innovative surgical procedures, each with its own benefits. While older patients may be best served by a total hip replacement, for example, a younger patient with hip damage may find that hip resurfacing is a better choice.
Dr. Raterman’s Orthopaedic Surgery Experience Translates to Better Results for Shoulder, Knee, and Hip Surgery
Dr. Raterman draws on his decades of medical experience and his commitment to educating future orthopaedic surgeons to provide the best-possible results for his patients. After completing medical school and his residency, he began practicing in Florida, and in years past, he was the Chief of Surgical Subspecialties, Chief of Staff, and Chief of Credentials at University Community Hospital. Even as he works with FMC’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Raterman is also a Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of South Florida, a school recognized for its excellence in the field of health care. He also gets fifth-year residency students involved in his practice, helping the next generation of health care providers develop firsthand experience.
With his extensive background and technical skill, Dr. Raterman can perform arthroscopic hip, knee, or shoulder surgery, as well as partial knee resurfacing, and the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) procedure, which he helped pioneer. He also takes a compassionate approach to care, understanding the goals that each patient has for their procedure and the recovery afterward.
