Research plays an important role in what we do at Florida Medical Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine & Spine, particularly in our Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Stephen Raterman, MD, uses innovative approaches to enhance and replace hips and knees, helping his patients address symptoms and regain mobility in their joints. He is also a Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of South Florida who is working to guide the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons as they learn to identify and treat hip, knee, and shoulder damage.

USF is widely recognized as a leader in the medical research community, and Dr. Raterman’s ties to the university and past associations with University Community Hospital have improved his ability to serve his patients. Also, he makes an effort to involve students who are in the fifth year of their residencies to work closely with him throughout his practice. By combining his teaching skills with his decades of orthopaedic surgery experience, Dr. Raterman helps to bridge the gap between education and practical experience.

An innovator in his own right, Dr. Raterman was one of the first surgeons in this country to have trained in England to complete the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing procedure. This technique is often a better option for younger patients who require treatment for hip disorders.
