Optometry Pre- and Post-Surgical Care
Optometrists generally don’t perform eye surgery. However, if you need to undergo an optical procedure, you can count on your optometrist to guide you through the necessary pre- and post-surgical care. There’s no need to stress over eye surgery, but in the event that you do feel anxious, being able to speak to a trusted provider can put you at ease and help you feel more comfortable throughout the process.
Pre-Op Surgical Care
In many cases, an optometrist will be the one who recommends that a patient undergo eye surgery. When that happens, the optometrist will explain what the procedure involves and answer any questions that the patient might have. They may also refer the patient to an ophthalmologist who can perform the operation.
Leading up to the day of the procedure, the optometrist will continue treating the patient, taking care to address any issues that could present a problem during surgery. For example, dry eye could potentially lead to complications both during and after an optical procedure. So, if a patient is experiencing dry eye, an optometrist may take steps to treat that condition before the patient undergoes eye surgery.
Post-Op Surgical Care
It’s common for patients to have to attend numerous follow-up appointments after eye surgery, and in many cases, optometrists can conduct those visits. Post-op surgical care often involves monitoring how the patient is progressing, answering questions related to the recovery process and transitioning the patient back into their regular eye care regimen.
