Hip resurfacing is a common orthopaedic procedure that, for some individuals, can be a more advantageous alternative to a total hip replacement. During a hip replacement, a surgeon will remove the degenerated part of the hip joint, then replace the removed bone with an artificial implant. During a resurfacing procedure, however, a larger amount of the patient’s original bone is left in place, which tends to be better for active individuals. For instance, bone conservation often correlates with a greater postoperative range of motion. Additionally, patients who choose hip resurfacing over a replacement are often less likely to require revision surgery in the future.

While each candidate needs to be carefully evaluated to determine which procedure would be best for his or her unique needs, hip resurfacing may be an appropriate treatment for a wide range of orthopaedic conditions, including:

  • Osteoarthritis of the hips
  • Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI)
  • Avascular necrosis
  • Congenital hip dysplasia
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

At Florida Medical Clinic, hip resurfacing is just one of the advanced orthopaedic procedures we offer to patients with conditions affecting the hips or other joints. Our team can review each patient’s diagnosis and recommend a range of treatments, from medication and physical therapy to surgery and everything in between. Should a patient opt for surgical treatment, he or she can consult with our experienced orthopaedic surgeons to learn more about what to expect after surgery, as well as what the recovery process for each option looks like. Our orthopaedic procedures are performed in clean, modern facilities that are outfitted with the latest surgical tools and technologies.
