Total Shoulder Joint Replacement Life After Surgery

How to Prepare for Shoulder Surgery

Shoulder surgery may be a viable option for you if you have a condition such as arthritis, tendonitis, or a torn rotator cuff, and conservative treatments have not significantly reduced your symptoms. Dr. Ira Guttentag, M.D., F.A.C.S., of Florida Medical Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine & Spine has helped countless patients regain strength and mobility in their shoulders with advanced, minimally invasive joint replacement surgery. Dr. Guttentag has served as the Medical Director and Head Team Physician for the Tampa Bay Lightning since 2002, and he has vast experience working with people of all fitness levels.

When preparing to have shoulder replacement surgery, you’ll want to pay close attention to your surgeon’s orders because these will help during the recovery process. This includes:

  • Informing your surgeon about any medications you take, as certain medications must be stopped before surgery
  • Donating blood, if directed to do so by your surgeon
  • Learning about your options for anesthesia, which will be based on the results of your physical exam, your health history, and any medications you currently take
  • Performing any muscle strengthening exercises recommended by your surgeon, which will help for postoperative recovery

You may also want to take some time to stock up on single-serving meals that can be heated up quickly in the microwave, so you don’t have to worry about what you’ll eat after shoulder surgery. In addition, set aside comfortable, loose-fitting clothes to wear in the days after surgery; the last thing you’ll want to do is laundry. You may also want to consider asking friends or family members to assist you as you recover.

Thankfully, the minimally invasive shoulder replacement surgery that Dr. Guttentag performs allows most patients to experience a more rapid recovery period when compared to traditional open surgery. You may also have less postoperative pain and scarring as a result of Dr. Guttentag’s approach.
