EEG (Electroencephalography) Testing at Florida Medical Clinic

EEG | Neurophysiology | Neurological Diagnostic Testing

An EEG (electroencephalogram) is a safe and noninvasive test that can diagnose a variety of brain disorders. The brain works by sending out small electrical impulses; EEGs can be used to monitor this activity and translate it into a visual image. This image can provide detailed information about the electrical activity occurring in a person’s brain.

A typical EEG can take anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes, although some can take up to three hours. Prior to the test, a technician places several small metal discs (electrodes) on a patient’s scalp, then connects the discs to an instrument that monitors and records the patient’s brain waves. Patients may be asked to complete simple tasks (such as looking at a picture or reading a few sentences out loud) during an EEG, although they spend the majority of the time relaxing with their eyes closed.

Because these tests are simple, painless, and capable of providing detailed information about a patient’s brain activity, electroencephalograms are often used to diagnose the following conditions:

  • Epilepsy and other seizure disorders
  • Brain tumors
  • Concussions and other traumatic head injuries
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Dementia
  • Narcolepsy and other sleep disorders
  • Encephalopathy (abnormal brain function)

EEG testing is just one of the advanced diagnostic services offered by the Department of Neurology at Florida Medical Clinic. To help our patients get the answers they deserve, we offer a comprehensive range of services, including EMG and EEG testing, nerve conduction studies, and visual evoked potentials.
