Mastectomy

Restoring health and confidence.

A mastectomy is a common form of breast cancer surgery in which one or both breasts are removed. This surgery is more extensive than a lumpectomy, in which only a tumor and a small amount of surrounding tissue are removed, but it does reduce the likelihood of the cancer coming back.

This surgery is more extensive than a lumpectomy, in which only a tumor and a small amount of surrounding tissue are removed, but it does reduce the likelihood of the cancer coming back.

A mastectomy is also more suited for individuals with tumors that are larger than five centimeters. This procedure can also be performed in individuals who do not currently have breast cancer, but who are genetically predisposed to the condition and want to proactively remove breast tissue for future peace of mind.

The decision to have one or both breasts removed is a highly personal one, and Florida Medical Clinic’s surgical breast oncologists provide comprehensive guidance and support throughout the process. We offer a number of surgical options, including:

  • Total mastectomy – breast tissue, nipple and skin are removed, but not the lymph nodes
  • Radical or modified radical mastectomy – In the radical procedure, the breast tissue, nipple, skin, and underlying muscles are removed, along with one or more nearby lymph nodes where the cancer may have spread. In a modified radical procedure, the underlying muscles are left intact
  • Preventive (prophylactic) mastectomy – Healthy breast tissue is removed to prevent cancer from developing or, in patients who have already been diagnosed with breast cancer, to prevent cancer from coming back in the other breast
  • Nipple-sparing mastectomy – The breast tissue itself is removed, but the original nipple is preserved.

Whenever possible, our surgeons use minimally invasive techniques to reduce the disruption of healthy breast tissue. For instance, many breast tumors can be removed through a series of small incisions rather than a traditional surgical cut. These types of incisions are often associated with lower complication rates and shorter recovery times. Our surgeons also use robotic surgical systems to help enhance operative precision, lead to better outcomes and a higher postoperative quality of life.

When performing breast surgery, we not only consider the potential clinical outcomes of a procedure, but the aesthetic outcomes as well. A collaboration between our general surgeons, cosmetic surgeons, and plastic surgeons helps us produce the best possible aesthetic outcomes. We can also perform immediate or delayed breast reconstruction surgery following a patient’s mastectomy. Patients are encouraged to consult with their surgical oncologist to determine the best time frame for reconstruction surgery, should they choose to have this cosmetic procedure after treatment.

Using our clinically integrated approach to care, our patients are able to access a variety of support services within Florida Medical Clinic, enabling you to discuss your options with experts in several different fields before moving forward.

Lumpectomies

A lumpectomy is a type of breast cancer surgery where only the tumor and a small amount of surrounding tissue is removed. This is a less invasive form of surgery when compared to a mastectomy.
